Donna Roppolo’s newest body of work was inspired by the beauty in nature that emerges despite all the challenges in the environment and how it relates to her life. The fractures created in her signature canvas represent the map of difficulties one must face and maneuver, and the explosive saturation of color is indicative of chaos.  Despite these encounters, butterflies and flowers emerge from her compositions where she builds on their forms to expose and release them into our view.  Roppolo’s palette also includes precious metals, some left in their natural form to contrast against the destructed surface which symbolizes strength.

Roppolo’s process is unique and laborious, working with various layers applied to fabric, and often with precious metals, to create her own canvas.  Through destruction and manipulation, oxidation methods, transparency, and other techniques she embraces the effects created by the unity of choice and chance.  She then studies its unique markings until its composition emerges and reveals itself for her to develop.
